BLOCKING OF MALAYSIA TODAY WEBSITE: MCMC acted within its rights, says Home Minister
By : EILEEN NG at the Dewan Rakyat

[The New Straits Times Online] KUALA LUMPUR, THURS:

The Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) acted within its rights to block access to Malaysia Today news website.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar said the commission was just exercising its powers as provided for under the Communications and Multimedia Act.

"Everyone is subjected to the law, even websites and blogs," he said at the Parliament lobby today, adding that the government did not have any intention to curtail the freedom of expression.

"However, when you publish defamatory contents, it is only natural for action to be taken," he said.

MCMC had instructed all Internet service providers to block access to Malaysia Today following complaints from the public regarding offensive comments posted on the website. Despite the measure, visitors can still access the site via mirror websites and foreign-based DNS.

Deputy Energy, Water and Communications minister Datuk Joseph Salang Gandum said he was unaware of MCMC's actions.

"MCMC did not brief me, but they might have briefed the minister," he said, adding that minister Datuk Shaziman Abu Mansor is currently in Bali and is expected to be back tomorrow.

Information minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek said although he was aware of the action taken against Malaysia Today, noted that it does not come under his ministry's jurisdiction.

Wrong move... Address the real issue by taking action against the bloggers who break the law and do not resort actions that deemed undemocratic and regressive. But on the other hand, blogging community too is partially responsible by behaving in a irresponsible and unethical ways. Licence to blog is NOT license to slander and provoke racial and religious sensitivities.

Patrick, Kuala Lumpur:
Although MCMC has claimed that it is within their rights to block access to any website and blog they should take into consideration the fact that our country is 51 years old and I believe the majority of blog readers are matured enough to distinguish facts from fiction. Therefore, their action in this case will be viewed by many as a step backwards in the freedom of expression and of choice.

Faez, London:
Again another prime example of how symptom is cured instead of the cause! This is an obvious, overreacting response to the outcome of the PP by-election and while I'm not blaming any party, this matter should have been handled more subtly. What is natural, is that fellow readers are not daft and gullible enough to believe every single supposedly defamatory materials out there. This action by MCMC is not only silly but an insult to us responsible Malaysians. The MCMC should have realised that their actions may risk the loss of popularity and approval of the government, something it badly needs.

We have just back tracked from democracy...this is cracy.

Jiin, KL:
What happens after this? Will we turn into China and have all supposedly "offensive" websites blocked? I think the action by MCMC is uncalled for!

megat,kuantan:
i suggest don't block the website.

EB & Subang:
By blocking the access, the authorities are stopping the public from knowing the facts. The public is able to judge for themselves whether to believe or not.

What is happening to my beloved country? What next?

What's the difference between this and obstructing democracy and freedom of speech
