KUALA LUMPUR, WED: Nomination for the Permatang Pauh by-election will be held Aug 16 with polling on Aug 26 in the event of a contest.

The dates were announced by Election Commission chair man Tan Sri Abdul Rashid Abdul Rahman after chairing a meeting to discuss the by-election at the EC headquarters in Putrajaya.

The by-election, called hardly five months after the 12th general election on March 8, was due to the seat falling vacant with Parti Keadilan Rakyat president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail tendering her resignation on July 31.

According to the Elections Act, a by-election would have to be called within 60 days of a seat being vacated. The speaker would have to inform the Election Commission before it can announce that the seat is vacant.

Perrmatang Pauh has 54,448 registered voters of whom 69.4 per cent are Malays while Chinese voters make up about 24.5 per cent and Indians, six per cent.
In the March general election, Wan Azizah secured 30,338 votes to BN candidate Datuk Pirdaus Ismail's 16,950.

Dr Wan Azizah is giving way for her husband and de facto party leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to contest.

For Anwar, the parliamentary constituency has been a home ground of sorts for him ever since, as a party rookie, he helped Umno wrest it from Pas control in the 1982 general election by defeating Zabidi Ali, a revered local ustaz.
Anwar represented the Malay-majority seat for four terms before his 1998 arrest and subsequent imprisonment. Since then, Dr Wan Azizah has been the MP for the constituency.

Jika gentar pada risiko..usah bicara erti perjuangan....
